Water quality and legislation

By: Rudy Calders – In Flanders, legislation governing swimming pools dates back to the late 1990s, but it has been regularly amended and adjusted over the years. What exactly do these rules mean? Which water parameters are measured and why are they so important? In the Netherlands, the legislation for swimming pools has been updated since 2024, with new parameters and standards being applied.

During this session, Rudy Calders, microbiologist at the Provincial Institute for Hygiene (PIH) of the Province of Antwerp, will take a closer look at the differences and similarities between Flanders and the Netherlands in the field of water analysis. Is Flanders' current approach outdated, or is it actually a leader in the sector? In this session, he will also provide a clear overview of the current state of affairs and discuss how water analyses can be assessed. Attention will be paid to the chemical and bacteriological aspects of swimming pool water. Innovation and sustainability will also be examined, partly on the basis of Best Available Techniques (BAT). How can new technologies contribute to more efficient management and better compliance with legislation? With practical insights and accessible explanations, you will be given tools to effectively guarantee water quality and translate legislation into practice. This will bring you completely up to date with the latest developments in water management.

This knowledge session will be held at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in Knowledge Dome #1.
