By: Ludo Heylen – How do you ensure that children not only learn to swim, but also enjoy coming to swimming lessons? Experience-based swimming lessons create an environment in which children feel comfortable and remain actively involved. We constantly observe how children feel during the lesson and how active and curious they are. By consciously responding to this, we create a dynamic learning environment that challenges and motivates children. Essential to this is the use of seven factors that increase engagement, with room for personal initiative playing an important role: making your own choices in the practice material and working independently a lot. Learning together is also a powerful tool, with children inspiring and supporting each other. The classic row work at the edge of the pool is replaced by an interactive approach that minimizes distraction and maximizes enthusiasm.
Ludo Heylen, an authority in the field of experiential education, shares his insights in this session. As former director of the Center for Experiential Education (CEGO) in Leuven and co-author of numerous educational books, he brings a wealth of experience to the table. He shows how you can increase children's engagement and make learning fun. So that swimming lessons are not just skill training, but an experience that children enjoy participating in and enjoy.
